R.I.P. Polaris

Found on Facebook today, a notification by ex-chair Mixu Lauronen: the Oulu sf society Polaris has been officially terminated. The society was founded on December 10, 2001, and the termination date is July 10.

The society has been inactive for years, but in its day it used to, among other things, publish the zine Mytago, and give out the Lumimies award, given for various fandom-related activities.

2001? Really?

I heard that Polaris was terminated because there is a new sf society in Oulu called Oulun SF-seura Iku-Turso.

Hannu: That is what was stated in the announcement, although I clearly remember there being a Polaris way earlier. Maybe that's when the society was registered? I will inquire.

2001 was indeed the year of the registration. The society was founded either late 1991 or early 1992.
